If you have spent any time at Creekside, you have heard that our mission as a church is to Love God and others, to Grow in Christ and community, and to Reach our neighbors and the nations. Over the next several weeks we are going to use “The Current” to consider four main means by which we are seeking to be faithful to that call.
#1: Be a people of the Word. This is crucial for us if we are to have any hope of being faithful Christ followers since it is the Scriptures that tell us about Jesus, his ministry of word and deeds, and his command for us to do likewise (John 17:18). We talk about this in our Profile of a Maturing Believer.
Maturing Christians will be growing in their relationship with God through the Scriptures (Word oriented): The Scriptures are God’s gracious self-revelation to humanity, and as such are vital in our coming to a greater understanding of who He is and what He has done for us through Christ by the power of the Spirit. The Scriptures not only provide us knowledge about God but serve as a Spirit-illuminated conduit for growing in our relationship with Him. We intentionally spend time hearing from God in His Word, reflecting on what it reveals about Him and His mission for us, and responding with joyful wonder and humble obedience
It’s important for us to acknowledge that as Christians we can engage the BIble in a way that makes it a “text” to be mastered instead of God’s self revelation that should master us. We seek to study the Scriptures because they speak of Jesus, who is the Incarnate Word, full of grace and truth. This means we go to the Bible humbly (it is God’s self revelation), expectantly (it is used by God’s Spirit to bring transformation), joyfully and gratefully (it contains the words of life.)
Simply put, it is our desire at Creekside to grow in our understanding of the Word so that we can better know Jesus and faithfully follow him.
